Selfportrait of a mother, 2022
Camilla Johansson-Merrick
For as long as I can remember I have been looking for home, within myself and within my surrounding environment. I am slowly learning, that it is both a place and a way of being.
I am a Norwegian/Australian photo artist, based on the far south coast of NSW Australia, Thaua Country, Yuin Nation.
After suspending my visual art degree at Sydney College of the Arts to give birth to my firstborn son, I found myself moving deeper into the exploration of our need for belonging and our relationship to memory. Where do we end and where does our environment begin - or is everything the same as everything else. As humans we tend to separate ourselves from our environment. We create identities, physical and mental boundaries and personal realities. I am fascinated by the stories, the memories, and the transient imperfections of the not so obvious.
